Outdoor Living, Extended

Motorized patio screens drop a tensioned fabric panel down the face of a patio, pergola, balcony, or large opening and lock it into tracks on both sides. Raised, they disappear into a slim headbox and the space stays fully open. Lowered, they hold a clean, taut wall of shade that blocks sun and insects while preserving a view to the yard.

For Houston homes, that is the difference between a patio that sits empty half the year and one that works as true living space. Pair a screen run with a premium aluminum pergola and you have an enclosed, climate-tempered outdoor room; run it across a sliding glass wall or bifold glass walls and you gain a second layer of sun and storm control over the glass. Every screen is operated by a quiet tubular motor and can be set on a remote, wall switch, sun/wind sensor, or smart-home control.

Engineered for the Houston Climate

Houston asks more of an outdoor screen than almost any U.S. market: relentless summer sun, heavy rain, Gulf wind, and one of the longest mosquito seasons in the country. These screens are built for all four at once.

Sun & heat

Solar-grade fabric cuts glare and blocks UV, shading the patio and reducing heat gain against adjacent glass doors and windows.

Rain

A lowered screen sheds water away from the patio, extending usable time through Houston's frequent showers.

Wind

A windproof zip-lock system holds the fabric firmly in its tracks; the manufacturer rates the locked fabric to resist winds up to Beaufort 12.

Mosquitoes & privacy

The sealed track-and-zipper design leaves no side gaps, so the screen keeps insects out and the patio private.

These are weather and comfort screens, not a substitute for hurricane shutters or heavy-duty glass — see heavy-duty aluminum doors for storm-season protection. The result is a patio that stays comfortable, dry, and bug-free across far more of the Houston calendar.

Anatomy of a premium motorized screen

Every callout below is a deliberate engineering choice — concealed motor cover, EVA sponge strip, level-12 windproof curtain system, polymer-lined inner track, and a sealed anti-collision bottom rail.

Fabric & Openness Options

The fabric does the work, so it is specified to last. The standard glass-fiber fabric is shrink-resistant and durable, carries Grade 8 color fastness (the top of the scale, so it holds its color against Houston sun), is B1 fire-retardant with a limiting oxygen index above 32, and is antibacterial. An EVA sponge strip keeps the panel flat across its width.

You choose how much you see through it. Openness factor ranges from a full blockout to an open weave that keeps the view:

0%

Blockout

Maximum privacy, full glare and sun block, projector-screen darkness

1–5%

Privacy-forward

Strong privacy with a soft sense of the outdoors

10–14%

Balanced

Cut sun and insects while keeping the view

20–30%

View-first

Maximum view with light shade and breeze

Most Houston patios land at 3–5% for privacy-forward shade or 10–14% to keep the view of the yard. We will recommend a factor per elevation based on sun direction and how the space is used.

Anatomy of the System

Every screen is a complete engineered assembly, not a fabric roll on a pipe. Core components: left and right end plates, rear and front housing, the scroll tube, a tubular motor, conical crown and tailpipe, shading front slot and rear groove side tracks, the lower beam, the batten, and the fabric panel. The headbox is compact — roughly a 75 mm fascia with slim side tracks around 60 × 38 mm — so the hardware reads as architectural trim rather than bulky add-on equipment, in your choice of powder-coat finish to match the home.

Where They Fit

Motorized patio screens are the most flexible product in an outdoor build, and they pair with nearly everything else we install:

  • Covered patios & lanais — enclose one or more sides on demand.
  • Aluminum pergolas — combine with a premium aluminum pergola for a fully shaded, screened outdoor room.
  • Sliding & bifold door walls — add an exterior layer of sun and insect control over sliding and bifold glass walls.
  • Balconies, carports & large openings — span wide spans cleanly with motorized operation.

Note: these are exterior shade-and-insect screens. If you are looking for a screen on a single swinging or sliding door, see retractable screen doors.

Measurement, Installation, Warranty & Service Area

Your Door handles the project end to end: site measurement, fabric and finish selection, motor and control setup, and clean installation as part of a turnkey outdoor build. Screens carry a 5-year product warranty, and we serve Houston and the surrounding metro — Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, Cypress, Bellaire, West University, Memorial, and River Oaks.

Tell us the opening width and height, the elevation it faces, and how you use the space, and we will recommend a configuration and confirm lead time.

What installation involves

Your screen mounts either inside the opening or on the wall face around it, anchored at six points into solid structure. The make-or-break step is measurement: opening width checked at three heights, diagonals matched within 5mm, both sides plumb — before anything is drilled. Then the tracks go up, the sealing strips seat into the zip tracks, and the motor is powered and paired to its remote. Our Houston crew handles the full sequence, including the electrical connection. Frequently Asked Questions

Do motorized patio screens keep mosquitoes out?

Yes. The fabric edges lock into side tracks with a hidden zipper and the bottom rail seals against the sill, so there are no side or bottom gaps for insects to enter. In Houston's long mosquito season, that sealed track design is one of the main reasons homeowners choose zip-track over manual or curtain-style screens.

Can the screens handle Houston wind and rain?

They are engineered for it. The windproof zip-lock system holds the fabric firmly in its tracks — the manufacturer specifies wind resistance up to Beaufort 12 — and a lowered screen sheds rain away from the patio. They are weather and comfort screens, not a replacement for hurricane shutters or heavy-duty glass.

How much can I see through the screen?

That depends on the fabric openness factor, from 0% blockout (maximum privacy and full sun block) up to 30% (maximum view with light shade). Most Houston patios use 3–5% for privacy or 10–14% to keep the view while cutting sun and insects.

Will the fabric fade or sag over time?

The standard glass-fiber fabric carries Grade 8 color fastness — the top of the scale — so it resists fading in direct sun, and the patented bottom-rail and silica-gel track system keeps it taut and wrinkle-free rather than sagging like cheaper rollers.

Can the screens be automated with my smart home?

Yes. Each screen runs on a quiet tubular motor and can be controlled by remote, wall switch, sun and wind sensors, or integrated into a smart-home system for scheduled or automatic operation.
